The applied research and industrial activities conducted within the Electronics group focus on the development of innovative wearables for the medical market. We invented a new electrical architecture called cooperative sensors which is particularly well suited for wearables acquiring high-quality biosignals (such as ECG and bioimpedance) with dry electrodes (first generation) extended to functional images (second generation).
As a doctoral student, you will participate in our research efforts for the third generation of cooperative sensors, which should target low-power miniaturized sensors harvesting energy through the body. This new generation will solve current limitations (such as the need of a battery in every sensor). The challenges will be to keep the nice properties of cooperative sensors such as their ability to be easily connected and thus to offer high integration when embedded in large numbers of garments.
Compliance with the medical safety standard, electromagnetic interference with the environment, noise of measured signals, remote powering, and synchronization of sensors are just a few issues to solve with innovative electronic circuits. The problem will be addressed at system level trying to find the best overall solution. The development of an ASIC within the framework of this PhD is not expected.
In addition to the research activity specific to any PhD thesis, the development will encompass design, prototyping (with support of the team), and validation.
• Master degree in electronics or related fields
• Interest in and deep knowledge of analogue electronic circuits
• Good knowledge of system modelling/simulation
• Basic but solid knowledge of continuous-time LTI control theory and modulations
• Strong team-working skills and intellectual curiosity
• Enthusiastic, proactive and autonomous
• Written and spoken English (French as asset)
