Microtechnology industry networks (companies)
The microtechnology industry plays a key role in western Switzerland’s economy. When taking into account those companies involved in various aspects of watchmaking and in other microtechnology applications (medical devices, metrology, electronics, aeronautics, machinery, automotive, optics, telecommunications), this region’s microtechnology sector is estimated to be one of the world’s most important. With more than 1’000 companies operating within a territory of modest size, this industry employs more than 60’000 men and women, half of whom with higher degrees or specialized training.
Depending on the region, this highly developed network of expertise extends to different areas of application and to a variety of markets. In compliance with technical constraints and specifications for each market, companies within this network with a variety of expertise may offer finished products or subcontractor services, or manufacture machinery intended for machining or processing microtechnology components.
Combined with a dense network of microtechnology industries, the proximity of major colleges and universities (1’500 engineers in microtechnology graduated in the past 10 years), of science parks, private research institutions, continued-education centers and incubators, accounts for the region’s international acclaim as a premier site for the precision and microtechnology industries.
